Alcohol consumption has been a norm not only in this day and age but past generations as well. Although the origins of alcohol can be varied, it can be dated back as early as 7000 BC where chemical analysis of jars from the neolithic village Jiahu in the Henan province of northern China revealed traces of a mixed fermented beverage. At the present time, websites and articles portraying the negative effects of alcohol consumption is manifold. Even so, as a consumer, how would you find the best type of alcohol in the market with the most properties beneficial to human health?
To help consumers choose an acceptable alcohol we at ChemoPower decided to conduct a report on the health benefits of various types of alcohol. We conducted gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis to find out the chemical compositions of each sample. Data analysis was conducted using tools from ChemoPower, SmartDalton™, and MoleculeDB™.
Through the analysis, 471 compounds have been identified, 179 were identified to have beneficial properties for human health. There are a total of 12 unique health properties that we will be identifying in this study. Both will be illustrated in the pictures below.
The following graph was plotted using the total number of health benefits per alcohol type.
From the results of the study, we can conclude that Gin is the most beneficial to health compared to other alcohols as it has the highest number of health properties while vodka is the least beneficial to health compared to the rest. Thus, drinking gin is better option if you want to consume alcohol!
Only volatile compounds in each sample were analyzed, thus the data obtained may not be a true reflection of all compounds present.
